Butler Training Courses Held at Tythe House
There are currently three courses run for butlers and house keepers; Entry Level Certificate for Butlers and House Keepers, Advanced Certificate Level for Butlers and Housekeepers and Household Management Courses.
Entry Level Certificate Course for Butlers and Housekeepers
The entry level Certificate Course for Housekeepers and Butlers runs for two days and is held at Tythe House. This course enables the student to venture into private service or to refresh the skills for those already in practice.
The Entry Level Certificate Course lasts for two days and is held at a Tythe House, Ovingdean, East Sussex, accomodation is offered in the house.
Entry Requirements
The entre level Certificate Course for Housekeepers and Butlers runs for two days and is held at Tythe House. This course enables the student to venture into private service or to refresh the skills for those already in practice. Good level of English language spoken and written is a must.
Syllabus
- The role of staff within households
- Personal presentation
- Dealing with guests
- The multifaceted role of the housekeeper, both traditional and modern
- Household Management and Security
- Valet skills including packing and unpacking, covers a variety of different wardrobes ~ general care of clothes for both a ladies and gentlemans wardrobe
- The Dining Room (formal and informal) and the laying of tables
- Service of food, the pantry and preparation of food
- Protocol; dealing with family and guests/hospitality arrangements including answering the door/telephone with proper message retrieval and greeting guests
- Communication Systems
- Cleaning of silver and glass
- Employer to employee relationships
Assessment
The programme comprises a combination of lectures and tutorials with practical application of the skills learnt, where appropriate. There will be continuous assessment.
A certificate will be awarded to those successful in both theory and practice.

Advanced Certificate Course for Butlers and Housekeepers
The Advanced Certificate course lasts for three days for students who have not already sucessfully completed the Basic Course (two days).
The third day, which can be completed as a package of three days with the basic course (or taken separately if the basic course has already been completed) gives students an Advanced Certificate
Most students then complete the fourth day Mangement Course (a stand alone course) and if available a wine cellar management course as well
The course is residential.
Entry Requirements
The Advanced Certificate course is suitable for those who wish to extend their basic skills and gain a deeper insight into the attributes of a top Housekeeper or Butler. A good level of English is essential.

- Cigars, their handling and storage (Butlers only)
